Taking the diesel particulate filter and the EGR system out of use for good: the filter is emptied or cut out, the EGR is blanked off, and the engine computer is reprogrammed so it no longer looks for them. Shops offer it as a cure for a filter or valve that keeps clogging. A vehicle modified this way does not meet its type approval, so it fails the ITV emissions test and may not be driven on public roads; that choice rests with the owner. Repairing or cleaning the filter and valve so they keep working is listed separately.
